Portal Entryways App FAQ

Why does Portal keep the Portal Entryways app open to everyone? Won’t people abuse the app?

Portal keeps Portal Entryways available for everyone and anyone to use because many people have many different needs, including temporary, permanent, invisible and mobility-type disabilities.

What do I need to use Portal Entryways?

Install the Portal Entryways app on your iPhone on the App Store or Android phone from the Play Store. Enable Bluetooth and location services.

Do I have to enable Bluetooth?

Yes, without a Bluetooth signal, the Portal-enabled door will not “see” you, and you will not be able to use your phone to open the door.

Do I have to always enable Location Services?

Only choose ‘Always’ for location services if you’d like to have Portal Entryways automatically scan and open doors for you. You have the option to allow location services ‘Only While Using the App’, which mean you’ll need to open Portal Entryways for it to scan and open doors.

If I turn on Location Services, does it use GPS? And wouldn't that drain my battery?

Portal Entryways doesn't use GPS services. It only uses location services so that it can wake up in the background, scan for and open doors passively.

What phones will Portal Entryways support?

Portal Entryways app works on all modern iPhone and Android phones. You need at least an iPhone 5 running iOS 11.2+, or an Android phone with Lollipop (5.0) or newer. Your phone must also support Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth 4.0).

Does Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) drain the battery of the phone?

The Portal Entryways app uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology, which is different than the older Classic Bluetooth devices you may have used before. Bluetooth Low Energy requires very little power and will have minimal impact on your phone’s battery life.

Do I need to pair my phone?

No, Bluetooth Low Energy works differently to Classic Bluetooth, and it does not require you to pair your phone.

How long will the door be open?

As long as you are within a door’s opening range, it will stay open until you have safely passed through.
